So where to play? The New Zealand Tourist board have kindly categorised many of the top courses in the country into two bands.
The Marquee courses which are all internationally acclaimed, many designed by the worlds top golf architects and in superb condition year round.
The Majority of courses in this list are found in the North Island and include Kauri Cliffs in Maturi Bay on the North tip of New Zealand. Gulf Harbour Country Club a stunning Robert Trent Jones Jr design course in Auckland.
The Kinloch Club on Lake Taupo one of Jack Nicklaus best course designs worldwide.
The Marquee list continues on to the South Island with three courses surrounding Queenstown in the Southern Alps.
The Hills, Jack’s Point and Millbrook Resort all have stunning vistas to play golf in. finally, in the South Island’s capital of Christchurch, you will find Clearwater Golf Club, an upmarket resort designed by John Darby in conjunction with New Zealand Golf Legend, Sir Bob Charles.
The Second list created is the “Experience list” a selection of some quality golf courses that can be combined with the Marquee listing to create some excellent golf trails around New Zealand to match your itinerary or timescales.
The 24 Experience courses showcase local culture, Community spirit, country charm and value for money. Many of the golf clubs you will play will feel like a home from home very much like a traditional British Golf Club and you will find it hard to believe you are so far from home. Notable inclusions on the Experience list include Otago Golf Club (Formally Dunedin Golf Club) the oldest golf club in the Southern hemisphere formed in 1871.
