The golfing spotlight this week is firmly focused on the amazing Ayla Golf Resort in Jordan’s Red Sea resort of Aqaba, with the inaugural Jordan Mixed Open. The event see’s Golf Professional’s from the Ladies European, Challenge and Senior’s Staysure tours competing together for the very first time.
The Jordan Mixed open will see the different classes of Professional golfers Men, Senior Men and Ladies play of different tee’s but for the first time in Professional Golf playing for one individual trophy and prize fund. The format is refreshingly different and gives some of the world most competitive golfers the chance to play head to head across three tours in a stunning golfing location.
So never heard of Golf in Jordan. Well Ayla Golf Course is part of a new and exciting multi million pound resort complex on the Red Sea resort of Aqaba. as well as the fantastic Greg Norman designed golf course & academy being used this week by some of Europe’s top golf professional there is also a new Marina, 5* Hotels and luxury Golf & Waterside apartments. entertainment complex and a great beach club.
The resort is directly on Jordan’s beautiful red sea coast and only 10 minutes from Aqaba international airport. Sandwiched between Saudi Arabia and Israels resort of Eilat, Aqaba itself is an established sea side resort with plenty of quality hotels and restaurants to choose from. Apart from lying by the crystal blue sea, Aqaba is famous for its scuba diving and snorkelling with a pristine reef system only yards from the shoreline in one of the Red Sea’s first protected marine reserves. With its new international standard Ayla golf course, World class windsurfing and amazing sight seeing close by Aqaba is becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination.
Why should i consider coming to Jordan for my golf holiday instead of say Morocco or Turkey?
One of the most alluring features of Jordan and what makes it so different to many other places is what you do away from the golf course. if you enjoy playing golf 3 or 4 times over a week and spend the rest of your time exploring the area you are visiting, then Jordan could very well be your kind of destination. Two UNESCO world heritage sites are found close to Aqaba. The Jordan Red Desert safari at Wadi Rum, famed for Laurence of Arabia and one of the most spectacular natural landscapes on this planet is a must too experience one of the most spectacular sunsets you will ever see. As well as visiting the desert in 4×4 vehicles which is great fun, you can also stay overnight in one of the luxury lodges and watch the stars.
The other is the ancient city of Petra one of the modern 7 wonders of the world and again something worth going to Jordan for in its own right. Although the most famous spots in this huge archaeological site have been featured in many feature films its worth visiting here early in the day as it gets extremely busy later on. Petra is also one for people who like a day walking (you can hire a donkey but i would prefer my own legs) which for most golfers is not much of an issue.
There are literally hundreds of ancient tombs surviving here, along with a well preserved Roman amphitheatre and with a good guide its an amazing site to explore, one day may not be enough.
Having visited the so many iconic around the World. Petra and Wadi rum are up there with the best WOW places visited, ancient monuments and natures wonders combined for an unbelievable adventure.
