COSTA NAVARINO – A Greek Golfing Masterpiece

Golf in Greece? I was having a conversation a couple of years ago with a good friend and PGA Professional who was raving about a new golf resort development he had visited in Messinia Greece, a few hours drive from Athens. He assured me this was going to be something special in the future. We regularly hear about the next big thing in golf resorts at trade shows and in the travel press but sadly grand plans and reality don’t always come to fruition. Thankfully on this occasion, the grand plans of the Costa Navarino Resort have not only come to fruition they are being expanded to be the best golf resort in the whole of Europe and it’s pretty amazing already. Two golf courses are currently in operation and are both superb in design and setting with another two in the early construction stage this, without a doubt, has lived up to the initial excitement.

Costa Navarino - Getting hereCosta Navarino Resort, is home to two 5-star Hotels, The Romanos, a Luxury Collection Resort and The Westin Resort Costa Navarino, part of the Starwood Hotels portfolio, a conference centre, Anazoe Spa and Thalassotherapy, The Dunes Course – the first signature golf course in Greece, two specially designed children hubs, Cocoon and SandCastle, along with numerous culinary venues and a wide variety of sports, outdoor and cultural activities on offer. Navarino Bay, just a few minutes from Navarino Dunes, is home to the second signature golf course, The Bay Course.

Costa Navarino is located in an unspoilt, breathtaking seaside landscape in the Greek region of Messinia, south-west Peloponnese. Costa Navarino philosophy is driven by a genuine desire to promote Messinia while protecting and It comprises a number of distinct sites featuring 5-star deluxe hotels, luxury residences, conference facilities, spa and thalassotherapy centres, signature golf courses, as well as a wide range of unique year-round activities for adults and families.

Getting there – During the summer season (May – September) flights are available to Kalamata a 45 minute transfer from the Costa Navarino resort from a number of UK Airlines including British Airways and Easy Jet. in the spring and autumn when the weather in the Messinia region is great for golf the best option is to fly to Athens and transfer by road to the resort.

Beachfront located by the coastline of The Dunes Beach, in the Greek region of Messinia, south-west Peloponnese, and overlooking the Ionian Sea, The Westin Resort Costa Navarino is the ideal destination for golfers of all levels. Two award-winning signature golf courses, The Dunes Course and The Bay Course, 18-hole and par-71 each, exceed your expectations and set Costa Navarino as the new luxury golf destination in Greece. In a landscape of diverse topography with spectacular sea and river views, both golf courses have been designed to create a unique rhythm and flow, perfectly balancing excitement, challenge and breathtaking vistas. Crafted across natural terrain to reflect the rugged outlines of the distant mountains – with several holes playing directly along the sea, these beautiful courses are also complemented by a well-appointed clubhouse for an unforgettable golfing experience.

COSTA NAVARINO GOLF

Costa Navarino offers to all guests a unique, world-class Greek golf experience deserving of its historical seafront setting. A premier golf destination featuring two 18-hole signature courses, dramatically different in terrain and characteristics, both however situated on seafront properties, boasting wonderful views in all directions.

The Dunes Course

The Seaside Dunes Course at Navarino Dunes, designed by former US Masters Champion and Ryder Cup Captain Bernhard Langer, in association with European Golf Design, opened in May 2010 and is the first signature golf course in Greece.

This 18-hole par-71 championship golf course includes some links-style features in areas closest to the sea. Parts of the course venture into olive and fruit groves, while several holes run along a small river. Combined with large undulating greens, wide fairways and steep faced pot bunkers, the links element of the course adds to its unique style and playability so that each of the 18 holes presents a matchless challenge.

The Dunes Course includes a full-size driving range and a short game practice area with the largest green in Europe, Dunes Clubhouse with a well-appointed dining and function areas, for pre and post round activities, a designated members lounge with terrace and an exclusive Pro shop.

With the majority of tees offering inspiring sea views, the 18-hole seaside Bay Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones II, meanders through three distinct natural landscapes. The Seaside, Canyon, and Grove holes provide striking contrasts that make for an intense and memorable golf round.

The Bay Course plays to a par of 71 from a variety of lengths designed to challenge golfers of various skill levels. Crafted across the natural terrain, the layout is offering panoramic sea and mountain views, having also some holes that play directly along the sea.

We have a number of trips planned through the winter months so instead of playing in the cold, rain and wind, sign up for a great golf holiday with our qualified PGA Professionals. A Spring Golf training academy is a great way of improving your game. instead of having a half-hour lesson every other week think how your game can improve with eight hours of structured lessons through the duration of the academy. Everything is covered from driving to the short game. once you have spent the morning with your PGA professional you can put what you have learned into practice on some of Europe’s top golf courses.

We organise a number of golf training academies throughout the winter each year and believe that as well as improving your game it’s also a great golf holiday. The weeks are open to golfers of all standards and dependent on your abilities the individual tuition is tailored to your needs. if you would like additional tuition on certain aspects of your game we will be happy to organise a special 1-2-1 session for you during the week. Numbers are restricted on each of our Golf training academies so you get the best possible attention and benefits out of your academy.

Designed and completed in 1966 by the great Sir Henry Cotton, the course stands as a shining example of golfing architecture and one man’s passion for the great game of golf. Whether the former championship golfer had any inkling of the mark he was laying down when he first began implementing his vision upon the Algarve paddy fields from which his course sprung, we don’t know… what we do know is the staggering extent of the legacy that he created.

Known as one of the most challenging – and satisfying – courses in the whole of Portugal, this marquee course is as unforgiving as it is beautiful. Flanked by streams, ditches and water hazards, the course is maintained to the highest standard… and boasts an extensive array of subtle slopes, elevated greens and breath-taking scenery.

cascata

Cascata Golf Club(Las Vegas)

Cascata’s private gates open to a spectacular landscape that forms a regal backdrop for a golf experience like no other.

The par-72 course provides stunning vistas at every turn, including the 3,600-foot peak at Red Mountain, lush fairways, lakes, and streams. Class A PGA professionals attend to equipment, fashion or instruction needs, and players are accompanied on-course by a Tour-class caddie.

The Tuscan-style, 37,000-square-foot clubhouse offers an Old World ambience of unpretentious luxury, where attentive staff members oblige your every need. The dining room features an appetising menu sure to impress every taste. An excellent collection of rare and fine tobaccos is stocked in the cigar lounge’s custom-designed humidor.

The golf shop carries an array of equipment, stylish apparel and accessories. The men’s and ladies’ lounges are equipped with every conceivable amenity, including sink-side, flat-screen TVs.

Pinehurst No. 2, the centrepiece of Pinehurst Resort, remains one of the world’s most celebrated golf courses. It has served as the site for more single golf championships than any course in America and hosted back-to-back U.S. Open and U.S. Women’s Open Championships for the first time in 2014. The U.S. Open will return in 2024.

Opened in 1907, No. 2 was designed by Donald Ross, who called it “the fairest test of championship golf I have ever designed.” Ross was associated with the course for nearly a half-century, improving the course continually until his death in 1948. No. 2 is best known for its crowned, undulating greens, which are some of the most complex and widely hailed in the world. Ross believed in providing golfers with strategic choices, and Pinehurst No. 2 was intended to epitomise that philosophy.

The Idaho Club is home to Idaho’s only Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. As one of the world’s preeminent golf course designers and the greatest golfer who ever played, Jack Nicklaus turned the design into an art form as he carefully weaved fairways and greens into this exceptional panoramic landscape. The result is an impressive 18-hole championship golf course that, through the combination of breath-taking beauty and picturesque course architecture, delivers an unforgettable golf experience.

Beyond the championship golf, you can hike along mountain wetlands frequented by moose, elk and deer, and relax your body and mind while enjoying breathtaking sunsets followed by the brilliant patterns of the Northern Lights.

These are only a few of the reasons the western edge of the Rocky Mountains has quickly become a favourite destination for adventure seekers. The splendour of the Idaho landscape, with its high mountain peaks, alpine lakes and lush forests, provides the perfect retreat for families, outdoor enthusiasts and those just looking to reconnect with nature.

Costa Navarino Resort, is home to two 5-star Hotels, The Romanos, a Luxury Collection Resort and The Westin Resort Costa Navarino, part of the Starwood Hotels portfolio, a conference centre, Anazoe Spa and thalassotherapy, The Dunes Course – the first signature golf course in Greece, two specially designed children hubs, Cocoon and Sandcastle, along with numerous culinary venues and a wide variety of sports, outdoor and cultural activities on offer. Navarino Bay, just a few minutes from Navarino Dunes, is home to the second signature golf course, The Bay Course.

Costa Navarino is located in an unspoilt, breathtaking seaside landscape in the Greek region of Messenia, south-west Peloponnese. Costa Navarino philosophy is driven by a genuine desire to promote Messenia while protecting and It comprises a number of distinct sites featuring 5-star deluxe hotels, luxury residences, conference facilities, spa and thalassotherapy centres, signature golf courses, as well as a wide range of unique year-round activities for adults and families.

PGA Catalunya Resort is the culmination of more than 20 years’ work that continues to deliver on – and goes beyond – the vision of its founders. It incorporates two established championship-standard golf courses located near the picturesque town of Girona, Spain. The resort is owned by Irish entrepreneur Denis O’Brien and who also owns Quinta do Lago in Portugal.

This infrastructure includes two world-class golf courses – a Stadium course, recently voted the No.1 course in Spain for the third year in a row, and more gentle Tour course – a Golf Clubhouse, a Membership Clubhouse with private lounge, restaurant, and an exceptional Residents Club for owners, complete with indoor and outdoor swimming pool & children’s pool, indoor spa pool, tennis courts, fitness centre and treatment rooms.

montecastallio

Monecastallio – (Spain)

18 hole golf course, designed by Jack Nicklaus and considered as one of the best golf courses in Europe. The course was the home of the Volvo Masters for 5 consecutive years 1997-2001 and of Peugeot Tour of Spain during 3 years 2001-2003. It has also hosted in 2009, the Barcelo PGA Tour of Spain.

Montecastillo is one of Spain’s best value golf resorts and owned by Barcelo Hotels, who have already invested heavily in bringing the golf course back to its very best condition, with new bunkering which is great news, as this really is a Jack Nicklaus masterpiece. The hotel lies to the right-hand side of the spectacular cliff top18th hole, where a slice will put you out of bounds and into the hotel gardens!

The course has hosted the Volvo Masters 3 times and is in close proximity to the lovely historic town of Jerez, which is famous for its wine and sherry cellars. The golf clubhouse is set in an old Castillo, with a superb spa treatment centre and a great indoor swimming pool.

Royal Lytham & St Anne’s Golf Club was founded in 1886 and the present Course constructed in 1897. The Clubhouse celebrated its Centenary in 1998. It is one of the premier links courses in the world, host to ten Open Championships, two Ryder Cups and numerous other major tournaments including the Women’s and Seniors Open Championships. Northern hospitality has always been famous and Royal Lytham leads the way. You will be made very welcome.

The layout of Royal Lytham & St Annes has remained faithful to the original created by the Club’s first Professional, George Lowe, over a century ago. The only significant changes were made in 1919 when the club asked Harry Colt, the pre-eminent Course Designer of the time to make recommendations for improvement. It is renowned as a Course on which is it hard to scramble a good score, after all, there are 206 bunkers peppering the Fairways and surrounding the Greens. It may not be the longest of courses but it is one where careful thought and accurate shots are required.

Onyria P Golf  – links and parkland in a spectacular seaside setting  Within the natural amphitheatre of the Bay of Lagos, Robert Trent Jones II has fashioned Europe’s next great golf course, Onyria Palmares Golf. The brief given to this exceptional American golf course designer was to craft a 27-hole golf course which maximised the potential of its extraordinary environment.  The result is a golf course of breathtaking natural beauty which is a delight to play. The course opened 18 holes for play in October 2010 and the full 27 last June 2011 and it has matured nicely.

Robert Trent Jones II designed the golf course with the highest level of international tournament golf in mind as well as a pleasurable golf experience for members and tourists alike.  There is plenty of challenge if that’s what you want – especially from the white tees! Onyria Palmares Golf is composed of three returning nine-hole loops that can be played in any sequence. The genius in the routeing is that, depending on the sequence of play, each golf experience is different.  Each nine-hole loop has its own character and ambience.

In May 1990, the Real Novo Sancti Petri Golf Club started its journey with 27 holes, and today it has become one of the best golf courses in Europe. December of that year saw the official inauguration of the Clubhouse in the presence of HRH the Count of Barcelona, representatives of public authorities, founder members, and its designer, Severing Ballesteros.

Since that day, the Real Novo Sancti Petri Golf Club has changed considerably. Today it boasts a Golf Academy, Jack Nicklaus Academy, and even a children’s club. In 2000, the club was extended to 9 holes to complete the 2 full rounds you can currently play, named Mar (sea) and Pinos y Centro (pines and centre), totalling 36 holes. What is more, Real Novo Sancti Petri Golf Club offers 18 further holes, providing its clients with a total of 3 rounds of golf (all par 72) with different characteristics, that is to say, 54 holes in all. The practice course has been extended and equipped with sheltered facilities. Today it has more than 150 training spaces. They are 300 metres long, with several areas for chipping with a bunker, a pitch-and-putt course and 3 short holes, as well as 4 putting greens. Real Novo Sancti Petri Golf Club has undoubtedly some of the highest-quality practice facilities in the south of Spain

North Granite Ridge – (Canada)

Designing this golf course within this type of landscape was truly inspiring. The variety of golf holes that play through these boulders and trees or utilise the elevations provided by the granite ridges is second to none. It was easy to find fabulous green sites framed by trees and granite without altering the terrain. A number of tee decks are perched on the top of these granite ridges, providing long-range vistas over the forest, without a road to be seen or heard… it was beyond compare.

If there is a hidden gem in the world of golf, then North Granite Ridge sparkles brightly. It is up to you to come and discover this place for yourself.

We hope you all enjoy the Christmas and New Year celebrations and look forward to seeing you next year.

We prefer to talk to our clients and offer a custom built holiday which meets their specific criteria. International Golf Travel Market – Vilamoura Nov 2012

Newsletter December 2012

International Golf Travel Market or IGTM as it is normaly known as is the annual must do show for all golf travel professionals.  This year’s show was held in Vilamoura and was attended by Rachel and Neil.  Many people think it is just another jolly for us so we thought we would share with you a little of what goes on at these events and what we got up to during the week.

Day 1 – The Golf Tournament and Welcome Reception

We were very lucky to be playing the Oceanic Victoria course which had hosted the Portuguese Masters just 3 weeks earlier.  It is not a course we had played before and we always like to have first-hand experience of the courses we send our clients to so a good opportunity.  If you are ever in Vilamoura it is one of the must play courses.  There is a lot of water and the rough is very rough but it is a great layout and although there had been a lot of rain in the weeks leading up to our visit it was in great condition.  We did okay although we didn’t win anything but it was a great start to what we knew would be a very busy week. (Those tiny people in the picture are Neil and I!!) In the evening there was reception for 1200 people at theTivoliMarinaHotel.  It was a great evening and we caught up with some old friends and made some new, very useful, contacts.  There is always a new hotel or golf course to find out about and meeting the representatives face to face always makes it easier to do business with them.

Day 2-4 – Meetings, Meetings, Meetings

During IGTM 2012 there were 11,500 scheduled meetings between exhibitors and buyers and many more impromptu meetings.  We both had over 40 meetings scheduled during the 3 days and talked to many hotels, golf courses and ground handlers.  Our intention is always to offer new and exciting destinations to our clients and all these meetings gave us a great opportunity to investigate what is new in the golf travel market.    We also had meetings with destinations we are familiar with to discuss new offers and packages they have to offer.  There were so many destinations present at the show it would be impossible to visit them all but we certainly had a good try!  The days were long and tiring and we walked for miles between our many meetings but it was a great show for us and we returned home armed with lots of information and new ideas.

Outside all the meetings there was also a lot of networking and socialising going on.  Many of the best meetings were held over a beer in the bar!  IAGTO (International Association of Golf Tour Operators) sponsored a bar on the Tuesday evening which was a superb night.  The bar was across theMarinafrom the main show hotel and was rather a long walk although only about 200 yards as the crow flies.  Somebody had thought of everything and there was a catamaran which sailed back and to all evening so we didn’t even have to walk.  What a great way to go to the pub!

The final evening of IGTM was the IAGTO annual awards dinner where awards are presented to the best golf destinations around the world.  The winners included Dubai, Gran Canaria, Vietnam and the Dominican Republic.  The final award of the evening is the Honorary Award which this year was presented to Tony Jacklin, the most successful Ryder Captain in history, who was present to receive his award and was greeted with a standing ovation by the 1200 people present at the dinner.  It was brilliant to see one of Europe’s great honoured by the golf industry.  After the dinner there was a party at the Casino in Vilamoura which was attended by many of the people who had attended the dinner and was a fantastic end to what had been a tiring, busy, enjoyable and very worthwhile week for us.

Please keep an eye on our website as there will be lots of new deals and offers coming up as we follow up all the contacts we made in Vilamoura.

Travellers Advice – Cancelled Flights

3

CANCELLED FLIGHTS, TROPICAL STORMS & FIRST TIME TRAVELLERS

Usually these newsletters are all about golfing adventures, exotic locations, topping up travel miles with numerous airlines and making you just a little bit jealous dear reader. This month’s is just a little bit different & covers cancelled/ delayed flights, bad weather & first time long haul travellers.

“This month’s offering is about the more serious side of travellers advice – cancelled flights, being caught in a tropical storm & the problems facing first-time long-haul travellers”.

Cancelled/ delayed flights

In this age of international travel, more and more people will be faced with the nightmare scenario of a cancelled or delayed flight.

Delayed Flights

A delayed flight is bad news, especially if it jeopardises interconnecting flights. In this situation airlines are usually excellent at offering options (usually while you are flying). Sometimes interconnecting flights are held if a delayed plane has a lot of its passengers on board. Sometimes you will miss the next flight & it’s important you follow the given instructions closely as airport transfers, finding information/ ticket desks can involve lots of walking!! Reclaiming luggage/ getting through immigration obviously complicate the issue. Unfortunately there is no magic wand to waive as transfers to hotels, etc may be the inevitable outcome. I guess the best advice I’ve ever received was; “When we land you need to run amazingly quickly”!!!!

Something’s to consider are:

  • Listen carefully to instructions on the plane; it can save you time & long walks!!
  • Know your itinerary & read it carefully; don’t think you know it as you can easily get travel legs  and times mixed up
  • If you have missed your connecting flight talk politely with the airline information desk about alternative options; it’s easy to start shouting & get upset, this will not get you on another plane!!
  • Finally if you have people waiting for you at your destination try and let them know.

 Cancelled Flights

A delayed flight is bad enough; a cancelled flight can be a nightmare. Fortunately cancelled flights are not that frequent but they can seriously disrupt your plans and ultimately spoil your holiday or business trip.

A cancelled flight can be caused by many things, such as; mechanical failure of plane, planes out of position on their schedules, etc, but for whatever the reason it is always seriously inconveniencing for you and your fellow travellers.

I have had 3 flights cancelled on me (and before you say it I am not unlucky as far as flights are concerned).

The first was to the French Alps from London Heathrow, (we wanted lots of snow, it was just brought to Heathrow for us), so no plane!!! The travel company were brilliant and after some persuading organised a coach to drive overnight to the Alps. After all these years, a belated thanks to the two coach drivers who were real stars, (both real cockneys whose only words seemed to be; ‘Corr Blimey Mate’)

The second was a flight back from Hamburg to Manchester. This was the first time it had happened to me on my own so to speak; crikey what to do? I was stood looking at the Departure Board willing the flight to turn from “Cancelled” to “Only kidding” when a fellow passenger said, ‘you are going from Hamburg to Manchester’? ‘Was’, I replied. ‘Well doesn’t worry follow me’, said my guardian angel in a business suit. Off we went to the airline desk. It was at this point I realised 2 things:

  1. 1. Don’t hang about at the departure gate & get straight to the airline desk, (this gets you in front of a queue that will be about as long as a plane!!
  2. 2.  When at airline desk speak in a friendly conciliatory voice. Remember it’s not the airline staffs fault.

My guardian angel went through the options with the counter staff and quickly established that a flight to Munich and then to Manchester was our best option. We were quickly booked in and in what seemed like a few seconds were through immigration and having a long cool beer, (I got the drinks in of course as you always should do for guardian angels).

The third and most resent happened 2 days ago. I flew into Bangkok, checked into the wonderfully friendly Dusit Thani and then checked out next day for a 2 day business trip to Hong Kong. Upon arrival at the airport I was met with long queue at the departure gate and the departure boards saying nothing other than a 2pm flight. Having checked in on line and with only hand luggage I wasn’t sure about going straight through immigration? I asked an official (he had a badge), he told me to push through the crowd and ask at a particular desk. Here I was told the flight was cancelled and I could go the next day. As I was only going for 2 days the option of a next day flight, overnight accommodation, etc was not really feasible. Explaining this I was sent to the airline information desk. At this point points 1 & 2 from above were vindicated.

  1. 1. Only a small queue
  2. 2. I kept smiling at the airline staff who was trying to deal with a very irate man who wanted to be put on another plane immediately!! When they got to me (still smiling) they were relieved to deal with polite person & as helpful as they could be.

We quickly established that as it was a holiday weekend in Hong Kong all other flights were full. I therefore informed the staff I required a full refund. This was not something they could do so I have to get it back from the airline. So back in a taxi to the Dusit Thani, where very surprised staff checked me back in again!!

Now you must think, ‘Why is he telling me all this’, as a weekend in Bangkok is as good as a weekend in Hong Kong!!! You are right of course and I really shouldn’t grumble, which I am not. The point I want to make is that all my other Hong Kong arrangements, hotel booking & return flight had also gone out the window!!

When you book with Quality Golf Destinations Ltd your holiday/ travel arrangements are covered by our TTA bonding. TTA bonding like its sister ABTA covers all your costs. When you book with us your money goes into a trust account which we can’t touch until you have returned from your holiday. If you book everything separately yourself, (crikey we all think we can do it better & cheaper), remember you will have to claim all things back separately, (a long process with no guarantee of success).

Also read carefully the small print on cheap deals you may see. These usually state you have no chance of getting your money back!!!!

Finally on a light note, I write this in my hotel room waiting for a tropical storm to hit Bangkok. Nothing we can do about the weather, granted, but we can follow local advice.

I was going to go for a walk but with the high winds starting to pick up, I was advised by the door staff to beware of flying objects, such as street vendors’ apparel!!! To be hit by a flying mango off a market stall is one thing, by the whole stall is definitely another!!! So:

  • Listen to local advice
  • Don’t think you know best
  • Don’t get into areas where you can’t get back from

Do what I’m doing and sit it out & only start to panic when the hotel runs out of beer!!

Finally, finally, whilst watching the footie in the ubiquitous Irish Bar, I got chatting to a young couple who were not only in Thailand for the first time, they were also doing their first long-haul travel adventure.

They both confessed they had booked a three week trip & were planning to do Bangkok, Phuket & Koh Samui, but with nothing booked except 3 nights in a BKK hotel. We discussed numerous options (including learning about Thai cuisine) & our manager in Thailand, Tan will no doubt sort out an itinerary to make their trip one to remember. This encounter got me thinking about planning these sorts of adventure.

  • When you’ve booked your flight go on-line & book your seats so you are guaranteed to sit together
  • Check out your destination, its local things to do, sights to see; If possible book things in advance, it will save time & may avoid disappointment
  • If travelling around, check for travel options; don’t leave it till last minute to realise something’s are  a none starter
  • Check out hotel locations; to get the best out of your holiday, as they say its ‘location, location, location’

Finally whatever you are doing, enjoy your hard earned holiday.
