2016 Trip to Andalucia

Our recent trip was to Cadiz which is in the region of Andalucia which is a largely autonomous region of hills, rivers and farmland bordering Spain’s southern coast. It was under Moorish rule from the 8th-15th centuries, a legacy that shows in its architecture, including such landmarks as the Alcázar castle in Seville, the capital city, as well as Córdoba’s Mezquita Mosque-Cathedral and Granada’s Alhambra palace.

We visited the province of Cadiz which has over 25 golf courses, stretching round the southern tip of Andalucia which include parts of the Costa Del Sol and Costa de la Luz, for some time this area has been a firm favourite for golf, and the great selection of golf courses all around the coast and inland gives you a fantastic choice.

1-2

For those who love both golf and the sea.  Playing Parador De Malaga Golf  is a great choice, The hotel is located on the water, with direct access to a magnificent beach of soft white sand. You will also enjoy the swimming pool and tennis court.

The course itself was excellent and the hospitality was very good. the only thing I didn’t like was the planes flying over as it is very close to the airport. But what a great start to the week.

In the afternoon of Wednesday, we played at the Alcaidesa Links golf course which was designed by Peter Allis and Clive Clark, and built in 1992, on the Costa del Sol, half way between Sotogrande and Gibraltar. The course has been the venue f1-27or a number of professional tournaments.

This is the only links course in southern Spain and the most southerly in Europe. It has  excellent views of the sea and the Rock of Gibraltar.

There is also a new 18 hole heathland course a little further inland which opened in 2007. The Links course is par 72, with a length of 5,020 to 5,846m.
The Heathland course is par 72 with a length of 5272 to 6373m

Facilities include a golf academy, driving range, practice bunker, restaurant. Accommodation is available.

1-55Thursday we set off to play at Montecastillo Golf Club which is 1.5 km from the legendary Circuito de Jerez motor racing track, this upscale golf resort is also 13 km from the Moorish Alcazar of Jerez de la Frontera and 9 km from Jerez Airport.

Refined rooms with chic decor feature free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and minibars. Upgraded rooms have sitting areas and/or terraces with golf course views, while suites add separate lounges. Modern villas provide kitchens and gardens. Room service is offered 24/7.

This hotel and golf course should be in my opinion a definite visit if you are in the Cadiz area, the facilities and the hotel are one of the best in the area.1-107

1-120If you’re staying at the Barcelo Montecastillo Golf & Spa resort or in the area of Jerez then you must visit the Winery Urium & Sherry tasting,1-136

It is a family-owned bodega located in the centre of Jerez. The location, geographical orientation and the materials used in its construction all combine to ensure optimum conditions for wine maturation and ageing.

Bodegas Urium is a very old sacristy winery which boasts the full range of Jerez wines. We cherish the traditions, skills, processes and know-how of the wine-makers of Jerez and aspire to produce only the finest quality wines, stylishly and elegantly presented.

Our passion for sherry led us to establish a small family-owned bodega in the historic centre of Jerez. Bodegas Urium is the result of a lengthy and painstaking process of selection featuring wines from the most important soleras of the wine region of Jerez.

1-121The special situation and orientation of the bodega, as well as the materials used to construct its walls create a microclimate environment, which is essential to the maturing and aging of the wines.

Our bodega is a sacristy and houses the entire range of very old Sherry wines. Every year, an exclusively limited series of these wines, which have previously received the V.O.R.S. designation (wines that are at least 30 years old) are bottled.

We have preserved the ancient winemaking traditions of the bodegas from Jerez, and the skilful processes used by the expert winemakers. We take pride in our professionalism and attention to detail, as well as in the excellence of the wines and the elegance of our presentation.

Our next visit was to the Villanueva Golf Resort, we only played 9 holes but this was another course that’s worth a visit. 1-149

The Villanueva Golf Course is located in Puerto Real, a small town 10 minutes away from the city of Cadiz and only 2 kilometres away from the sea, and offers an 18-hole, par 72 golf course that will delight even the most demanding golfers.

This modern 6220-metre course opened in 2006 and is situated in Puerto Real, close to the city of Cadiz. It is close to the sea and set in beautiful surroundings.

The course has very large greens and Bermuda fairways all in pristine condition. The five lakes, 90 bunkers, and variable tee-positions give this course plenty to test the seasoned golfer.

On Friday we had the chance to enter the Andalucia Sol cup, which was played at the superb Golf Club, Iberostar Real Nova Sancti Petri Golf Club.

sancti-petri-hills-golf-courseIn May 1990, the Real Novo Sancti Petri Golf Club started its journey with 27 holes, and today it has become one of the best golf courses in Europe. December of that year saw the official inauguration of the Clubhouse in the presence of HRH the Count of Barcelona, representatives of public authorities, founder members, and its designer, Severiano Ballesteros.

Since that day, the Real Novo Sancti Petri Golf Club has changed considerably. Today it boasts a Golf Academy, Jack Nicklaus Academy, and even a children’s club. In 2000, the club was extended to sanctri-petri-29 holes to complete the 2 full rounds you can currently play, named Mar (sea) and Pinos y Centro (pines and centre), totalling 36 holes. What is more, Real Novo Sancti Petri Golf Club offers 18 further holes, providing its clients with a total of 3 rounds of golf (all par 72) with different characteristics, that is to say,54 holes in all. The practice course has been extended and equipped with sheltered facilities. Today it has more than 150 training spaces. They are 300 metres long, with several areas for chipping with a bunker, a pitch-and-putt course and 3 short holes, as well as 4 putting greens. Real Novo Sancti Petri Golf Club has undoubtedly some of the highest-quality practice facilities in the south of Spain.

The Sol Cup was played on the B course and the winner was Russ Ashman from Rhodium Events & Hospitality with a superb 33 pts 2nd was Bill Anslow from Grey owl Golf with 32Pts and 3rd was Bryan Moore from Golf fish with 31pts, i managed to score 25pts, well done to everyone who entered.
