South Africa – The Awakening of a Sleeping Giant.
0SOUTH AFRICA: THE AWAKENING OF A SLEEPING GIANT
South Africa is a country we all think we know, but in reality we don’t know it at all!!
It has its history intertwined with that of Britain for well over 100 years, they drive on the left, speak English as a matter of course and share our passion for all things competitive. South Africa is country whose people delight in its name of ‘Rainbow Nation’ which signifies its multicultural outlook.
South Africa for so long an outsider from the international community has gleefully be accepted back due almost entirely from the work of one man, Nelson Mandela, the father of free South Africa. Wherever you travel in South Africa you will never be far from his influence and how he is loved by his people.
After many discussions at trade shows and social functions, Quality Golf Destinations Managing Director Neil Adams was struck by their infectious enthusiasm for their country, their golf and life in general. Indeed if you want a quiet night out stay well clear of South Africans!!!
Neil Adams:
“For someone who loves nearly all sports, indeed has been a sports nut all my life, I have been fascinated about South Africa and its passion for rugby, cricket, golf and more recently football. I must confess that rugby is my number one sport and with this in mind we were always told that if you want to measure yourself in world terms then South Africa was the bench mark. Strange that now we all think the New Zealand All Blacks are the benchmark to aim at but until the British Lions won a series there in 1974 the Springboks had been unbeaten at home. Indeed the All Blacks had to wait quite awhile after 1974 to record their first series win in South Africa.
With the advent of Nelson Mandela and a new South Africa, their sport has been allowed to flourish again on the world stage. This has allowed us to see a new generation of sportsmen and women.
Golf has always been on the world stage with Gary Player bravely pioneering black and white South Africa in world golf. Gary, as fit and active as he ever was, is a truly courageous man who fought all sorts of prejudices during his career. He is an inspiration as someone who never took a step back no matter what the situation. Gary has been followed by great, great golfers such as Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Charl Schwartzel and Louis Oosthuizen and I’ve missed out a load more as well.
I had been told that South Africa was the place to visit, so with great excitement I headed to Southern Africa for the first time, wondering what was in store for me. The answer was the trip of a life time”
Getting There
To visit South Africa you can fly direct from London with several national carriers. Airlines such as South African Airlines, BA and Virgin all fly into a variety of cities. You can fly from regional airports via Dubai, etc. a longer route but sometimes more convenient than travelling to London. I flew Manchester to Dubai and then Dubai to Johannesburg. Flight times were 6 hours to Dubai & 8 hours to J’Burg. (Direct flights are in the region of 11 hours).
Johannesburg & Limpopo Region
I was a bit apprehensive about Johannesburg as I had been told it was quite dangerous. Having been met at the airport by Natalie my guide for the trip I was however reassured about the situation. I felt completely at home, comfortable with my surroundings and somehow amongst family. It was indeed hard to focus on work & not sit back and enjoy the holiday!! We did not go near the centre of J’Burg (you don’t need to). J’Burg is like any other city in the world, if you want trouble you will find it. True there are areas you shouldn’t go too, but that is the same as any other city in the world.

Our first stop was the Fairway 5* hotel: A fabulous hotel & a great way to introduce me to South Africa
The Fairway Hotels and Golf Resort is situated on the Randpark and Windsor Golf Courses in the suburbs of J’Burg.
The Fairway Hotel & Spa is a member of the Guvon Hotels & Spas portfolio and was the proud host of the 2010 Brazilian Soccer World Cup team.
Golf at the Randpark Golf Club was wonderful. A course in magnificent condition, this was the best way to shake off the stiffness in the legs from the flights. Randpark also gave me my first taste of having a caddy carrying my bag & making my club selection! Standing on the sixth a 170 yard par 3, over water, and to be handed the club that Simon (my new best friend) selected was well, hmmmm, interesting. I thought don’t look at the club selection just hit it. The result was middle of the green and a smiling Simon and a relieved Neil. Crikey this game is easy!!!!
Limpopo: the golf and Safari Route
The name Limpopo somehow always makes me think Africa and big game. In this area you can combine golf with safari. The Limpopo region is just west of the massive Kruger National Park.
I was promised the chance to see the ‘big 5’ (lions, leopards, cape buffalos, rhinoceros & elephants) on a game drive at the Legends Golf & Safari Resort. (I saw 3 out of 5 (lion, elephant and rhinoceros) but what the heck, I also saw giraffe, antelope of several varieties and wart hogs).
The drive to Legends took about 2 hours and on the way we passed 3 other golf resorts. These resorts are:
Zebula Golf Estate & Spa
Golf estates abound in South Africa but none can match Zebula, a stunning and totally unique lifestyle destination a mere 2 hours’ drive north of Johannesburg in the magnificent malaria free Waterberg region of Limpopo Province.
Located on 1600 hectares of pristine bushveld in the shadow of the Waterberg mountains, Zebula commands a most spectacular setting. Undulating, indigenous tree covered hills and wide open grasslands are punctuated with frequent dams and waterholes, a diverse landscape that supports a wide variety of game, birds and small wildlife.
The setting for Elements Private Golf Reserve is one of the biggest factors in its favour. The surrounding bushveld terrain varies between natural hillsides and open plains, with mountain views and perennial streams. The golf course meanders through a fertile valley of indigenous vegetation and artful landscaping. Sustainability and the quality of the golf course’s playing surface, is ensured by the plentiful supply of water.
The Clubhouse is located on a rise overlooking the 9th and 18 holes and offers an unsurpassed view of the course and surrounding landscape. Elements Private Golf Reserve was recently rated in the Top 10 Golf Courses of South Africa for the second year in succession.
We called into Euphoria which is a wonderful resort whose golf course was in great condition.
Euphoria Golf Estate & Hydro set in the beautiful Waterberg mountain range in Limpopo is only 2 hours drive from Johannesburg. The 18 hole Championship golf course is the first golf course in Africa to be designed by Annika Sorenstam and provides a perfect links
like bushveld experience. The Estate is also distinguished by a cableway which links the club house to the mountain estate and Sundowner Deck Restaurant, perfect for watching the sunset while enjoying breathtaking views. Euphoria also provides luxurious accommodation in the Bush Villas, a Hydro, a golf academy and nature reserve offering hiking, bird watching, fishing, nature drives etc.
Legends have 4 main attractions:
The Legends golf course with 18 holes each designed by a modern golf legend from Luke Donald to Retief Goosen. You have therefore some really contrasting holes, some really technical and some simply monsters. This course was great fun, with magnificent back drop of the game reserve and a spectacular mountain, (more of that later).
A game reserve
The Resort is situated within the Entabeni Safari Conservancy in the malaria free Waterberg Region of the Limpopo Province of South Africa. This unique resort sets new standards in exclusivity and tranquility. It reflects the rich cultural legacy of this ancient part of Africa. An exceptional residential estate, where the Big Five roam free, epitomizes a wholesome family lifestyle in the bushveld. At Legend I undertook an evening Safari in search of the big 5 (as mentioned before I saw 3 which with my sort of luck was a magnificent effort!!).
Tribute par 3 course
The safari’s can be undertaken early morning or evening. I chose evening because in the morning I had a date with Augusta via Royal Troon!!! Time travel I hear you shout, well yes & no.
Having driven quite sedately from the wonderful accommodation to the Tribute course I was treated to a magnificent breakfast at the Tribute club house. Whilst sitting there I was intrigued how I was going to be amazed on a par 3 course. I was unaware of the inventiveness of one man, course designer and manager Dave Riddle, (a man who has coached 3 top 10 tour pro’s). Dave was on hand to take us on a trip around the world. We played 10 of the best par threes in world golf. These included The Postage Stamp from Royal Troon, the 12th & 16th from Augusta and to finish off the 17th from Sawgrass. Wow what a treat, (I can tell you that 12th at Augusta is a hell of a long par three with a green about 4 feet wide & a pond in front that just says ‘your golf ball is mine, matey’). This was a great way to finish our trip to the Limpopo Region.
Extreme Par 3
Oh I forgot I had a little helicopter ride and played a 500m par 3!!! Want to hear more?
Well at Legends the area is dominated with a large peak (500m high). Very nice back-drop you think. Hmmmm some crazy bloke decided to put a golf tee on top & create a monster par 3. Trouble is access is only via a helicopter. So off we went (through the game reserve) with the resident pro & our lovely caddie Brenda to take on the monster. I’m not great with heights I have to say, (OK with a rail in front of me). With this though whilst I was not happy, I was comfortable to be there, even standing on the edge hitting golf balls. (My usual pre shot thoughts of ‘hit the ball’ & ‘move it forward’, were replaced with ‘don’t look down’ & ‘don’t fall off’!). The views were amazing, the golf shots rubbish and the result was (drop a ball on the fairway at the bottom to finish the hole!).
The helicopter ride down was in the very best roller coaster tradition, scary & Sooooo much fun.
To give you some stats; next time you hit a drive get someone to count how long the ball is in the air, it’s probably 5 to 8 seconds. On extreme your golf ball is in the air for around 14 seconds, wow.
Will I do it again, a very big yes?
Will I be as scared, probably?
Will I hit the green, only if someone else takes my shot?
From legends we moved onto Cape Town. (This was a 2 hour drive back to J’Burg airport & a short flight to Cape Town).
Cape Town & Stellenbosch Wine Region
When Natalie asked if I wanted to visit Table Mountain, play golf & go wine tasting, I considered it for all of 30 micro seconds before saying well why not!!
Cape Town
Cape Town was magnificent. I
stayed at the 4 star Commodore Hotel part of the fantastic Legacy Hotel Group on the Victoria & Albert waterfront area. My window view was of Table Mountain, (I still can’t convince my wife I was away working). The waterfront area is very beautiful and safe with lots of restaurants and bars all busy & all the staff were most obliging.
‘It was here I had to buy Natalie dinner as she beat me at Legends. She also beat Dave Riddle (a pro golfer) & I combined on the Tribute course, (Dave walked off a broken man). She also won at Pearl Valley, (you getting my picture now). This girl kept smiling sweetly whilst saying, “But guys my handicap is 20”.
We went up Table Mountain (very dependent on the wind as it can only be reached via cable car). You can spend from an hour to 4 or 5 hours walking around up there, (ideal to take a picnic with you). The views are amazing & you can see Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was held prisoner for so long as well as all of Cape Town and large stretches of the coastal region.
Pearl Valley Golf Course

We went to play Pearl Valley Golf Course during our stay in Cape Town. The Pearl (as I instinctively called it) is rated in the top 3 courses in South Africa and I thought it truly magnificent. In immaculate condition, with some classic golf holes it is a must play course. The facilities were faultless & the staff so warm & obliging, (really South Africa summed up on a golf course). It was here that I found out the South Africans incredible will to win is not made up. What a match we had (lost again Mum to that Natalie woman!!), but we were all like long lost buddies in the club house later sampling a rather wonderful South African Ale. (Honest dear it was not a holiday!!!).
Clovelly Country Club
W
hilst in the area we visited the beautiful Clovelly Country Club.
Nestled in the pristine and tranquil Silvermine Valley close to Fish Hoek in Cape Town Clovelly Country Club is one of the finest golf courses in South Africa, Clovelly offers its members and visitors a memorable experience. A visually stunning golf course, which will have you running from the car park to the first tee.
Steenberg Golf Club

The luxurious Steenberg Hotel is situated on the Cape’s oldest farm, a mere 20-minute drive from the bustling heart of Cape Town. The hotel nestles in the tranquil Constantia Valley, against the slopes of the Steenberg Mountain, offering sweeping views over the False Bay. Its buildings, dating back to 1682, were lovingly restored and have been declared a National Monument.
Steenberg has a beautiful hotel, vineyards and again a stunning golf course. The most frustrating thing with this job is you get to visit great golf courses and you haven’t time to play them. (I can feel your tears of sorrow welling up for me!)
Kleine de Zalze

Our final destination (were we saving the best till last?), was Kleien de Zalze.
Located just 3 Km from Stellenbosch this is a world famous winery, hotel, golf course & award winning restaurant.
This was an absolutely fantastic place to end a most memorable trip.
With a magnificent back drop of vineyards, (so European and so familiar you could indeed be in the South of France). This was the very essence of South African winemaking. The accommodation, all named after grape varieties, (I stayed in a complex called Gamay), was very spacious
and superbly finished. The golf course was a great test of your golfing prowess especially after a wine tasting with our charming host Melvin de Kock (the best Kevin Petersen look-alike you will ever see). All this was finished off with a meal in the award winning Terrior restaurant.
My overall thoughts:

This is a big country that will draw you back time and time again.
A nation of genuinely friendly people who are delighted to meet you, chat with you and party with you.
A competitive bunch, who work hard and play hard. This is a country of seemingly endless blue skies and vast open plains. A place to see memorable sites, play memorable golf courses and get great hospitality.
When I boarded the flight at Cape Town airport, I looked around & said to myself, “I will be back, sooner rather than later”.
I would like to give special thanks to Natalie van Blerk, (don’t take her on for money!!!), a truly wonderful guide and host. I would like to thank all who hosted me, wined & dined me & beat me at golf (that’s her below with her pet zebra!!).
Warren, Adam and all at Giltedge.
Thanks to Pete (a Halifax lad who could do a braai (South African barbecue) as good as any local).
Dave and all the Extreme crew for getting me there & back again safely.
Finally all those I haven’t mentioned who made my trip memorable, you know who you are, thanks guys.

Off season Algarve
1FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER
ALGARVE – AN OLD FRIEND THAT CAN STILL SURPRISE
To many UK travellers the Algarve is both summer holiday of beaches and sun and also a spring and autumn destination for golfers. Indeed historically the British love of golf in the Algarve is only matched by the Costa del Sol in Spain. The long association between British golfers and beach/ sun worshipers has resulted in numerous time share and property purchases in the area.
Quality Golf Destinations Managing Director Neil Adams and Contracts Manager Robbie Matthews spent time re-acquainting themselves with the region in the traditional “off period” (December to February).
Neil Adams:
“There are many pluses to this job, (can’t think of many negatives to be honest). One of the best things is being surprised with sights; sounds and information about a region are not what you thought. I was under the impression that the Algarve was wet & cold in December through to end of February. This was not the case as the weather for our visit was warm and sunny (indeed not a cloud in the sky). Now as a person notorious within the travel business as a bringer of rain (by simply arriving in Patagonia I broke a 3 year drought which gave me instant popularity), this was an unexpected bonus. Indeed the Algarve had not seen any rain since the end of November and January had been warm and dry. Talking to golf course and hotel personnel the above months could offer excellent value for money and a great golf experience with the courses fairly quiet. The one down side I suppose for the party animals is the lack of night life as a number of bars and restaurants are closed for their annual staff holidays during January. Don’t worry dear reader Robbie and I didn’t go thirsty”.
Getting There
To visit the region most will be familiar with the flight to Faro. Most budget and national carrier airlines fly to Faro, although you need to check availability of flights in the winter as restricted services are usually in operation. The Algarve is just over an hours drive from end to end (Lagos to Faro Airport) on the new A22 motorway. Car hire is relatively cheap and can be included in your package from us, or you have transfers to your selected resort and some packages can include free transfers to the golf courses.
The Algarve Experience
If you stay in the Algarve there are a number of iconic areas which are synonymous with golf in the region. We visited 2 regions and one golf complex forever associated with UK golf history.
Vilamoura
The very name Vilamoura is the Algarve for sun seekers and golfers alike, indeed if we had £5 for every golfer asking “What have you got in Vilamoura?” we would all be retired and on a beach.
Vilamoura has long beach and a beautiful Marina. It has a vibrant night-life, lots of activities for non-golfers and most importantly some of the best golf courses on the Algarve. Some of the best hotels are situated around the marina area. Rooms with a marina view are usually at a premium but are well worth paying for the fantastic view. There are 6 courses in Vilamoura 5 owned by the Oceanico Group the Old, Victoria, Pinhal, Laguna and Millennium. The final course is the Pestana run Vila Sol 27 hole complex. All the courses are maintained to an excellent standard and th
e majority have picturesque umbrella pine lined fairways, green fee prices during the mid and low season are much more affordable compared to the busy spring and autumn seasons when prices are at a premium and the courses are always busy. Vilamoura is also an excellent base to play the famous golf courses at Quinta do Lago and Vale de Lobo.
Alvor & Lagos
Alvor is still a quiet local town with a small fishing port and narrow streets, it gets congested in the summer but during the winter months the town reverts back to its former laid back fishing village. The majority of the hotels here line the beach area, a short stroll from the old town. A number of championship golf courses are within easy reach of the town.
A ten minute car ride brings you to one of the Algarve’s most famous golf resorts, the amazing Le Meridian Penina golf and Spa resort. This is where golf in the Algarve started with the famous Sir Henry Cotton championship course built back in the 1960’s. The onsite Le Meridian hotel also oozes class and has still managed to keep the 60’s feel despite a full refurbishment program a few years ago, wood panelled restaurants with fine dinning, tilled bathrooms featuring the original Penina crest and the original flooring are all still here. This is combined with the very best of modern amenities set in a very tasteful way, you half expect to see an old E type Jaguar draw into the drive and Sean Connery type caricature remove his golf clubs from the boot.
Lagos is one of the largest towns on the Eastern Algarve, its big advantage during the winter months is that the town is not dependant on tourists so the bars and restaurants remain open and are cheaper than the tourist resorts to the west of the Algarve. It has a number of good hotels around the marina area and a newly built footbridge means gettin
g across to the town centre is readily accessible. A number of Golf courses are a few minutes drive away; one of the newest and most highly acclaimed courses is the Onyria Palmares resort. A fascinating combination of 27 holes of classic seaside links and winding inland holes, designed by one of our favourite modern day golf architects Robert Trent Jones II.
Summary
The winter in the Algarve is not quiet what you might expect of an Atlantic facing coast, Mornings and evenings can be cool and in January a slight frost may sometimes delay an early tee off time, but come for a week and you would be unlucky not to get 5 days with sunshine. Temperatures may only be 14-17 c in the middle of the day, not sunbathing weather granted but perfect for a round of golf and lunch outside in a nice sheltered spot and compared to a UK winter it defiantly feels like early summer. You can stay in a 5* hotel for 4* prices. Play on great golf courses when you want rather than when you can.

November Newsletter | Camels, Kasbahs and a Few Bandits – Golf In Morocco
1
We are always looking for the next new golfing destinations for our clients, the ongoing search for that elusive undiscovered spot where the sun is always shining, the golf courses deserted and the service is second to none, all for an affordable price and not too far from home. Is there such a place?
We were invited to discover the delights of Morocco and in particular the city of Marrakesh, it’s an area that has been drawing quite a bit of attention in the travel market since it won the 2010 IAGTO golf destination of the year for the Africa, middle east and Indian ocean region, beating some extremely good opposition in the process. Morocco has been an established destination for the European travel market for many years, its seaside resorts of Casablanca and Agadir have been a favourite with both the French and Spanish markets with visitor numbers toping over 2 million from these two countries alone in 2010, Marrakesh is set inland close to the Atlas mountains where in winter the snow toped mountains make a perfect backdrop to this ancient walled city.Marrakeshis set away from the mountains on the plain but is fed year round from underground rivers via the ancient Khettara irrigation system; it would be easy to forget that you are in a desert asMarrakeshis known as the garden city.
Marrakeshboasts a history dating back to its Moorish roots and its ancient city walls still circle the old town. At its centre is the natural theatre of Djemaa El Fna Square where magicians, acrobats, storytellers, and fortune-tellers gather to entertain you. Extending north from the square is the medina within which lies the imperial heritage of Marrakech. Wandering the Souks in the Medina is like travelling back in time, some shops glittering with jewellery, some festooned with richly coloured carpets and all around you the sounds of bargaining for that all important “best price”! Standing proud above all is Marrakech’s architectural landmark the “Koutoubia” dating back to the 12th century its minaret can be seen all over the city.
In the summer temperatures can easily top 40 c with little respite at night. During both autumn (Oct – Nov) and spring (Mar – May) the temperatures range around the 25-30 c with pleasantly warm evenings. In the winter (Dec – Feb) daytime temperatures 18-23 c with sunshine on most days but expect cool evenings, so some warm clothing is needed at night. Much of the rain inMoroccofalls during the winter in the north of the country on the hills facing the Mediterranean coast and the high Atlas mountains that borderAlgeria. As with any location the weather is as hard to predict at certain times of the year as your golf game. One thing we recommend when visiting a country likeMoroccois to ensure you stay well hydrated. The heat is very dry here so expect to drink 2.5 litres of liquid per day without having to rush to the loo ever half an hour.
Marrakeshhas 6 courses within a 20 minutes drive from the town centre, three of which are 27 hole complexes and Three 18 hole. Combine this with another 3 clubs currently under construction around the city there is enough variation to keep the most ardent golf fanatic content. Moroccan golf in general has an aim to double the number of golf courses in the country to more than 40 by 2015.
The Marrakech Royal Golf course is one of the oldest golf courses inMorocco, It is a course of extreme beauty – Winston Churchill, David Lloyd George and General Eisenhower have played here. The course is fairly narrow and winds through a profusion of cypress, eucalyptus, palm, olive, orange and apricot trees. It is a course of extreme beauty. It is located at the feet of theAtlas Mountains. This course will offer you a test of your shot making skills
27 Holes (9 Holes x 3): Par 72 (18 Holes) – Length: 6086 Metres
Blue Course: Par 36 – Length: 3072 Metres
Yellow Course: Par 36 – Length: 3014 Metres
Green Course: Par 36 – Length: 2939 Metres
Opened in 1995, Amelkis hosted a European Tour event within its first five years, the 2000 Moroccan Open. Originally 18 holes, a further 9 holes have now been added giving three loops, unimaginatively named the Red, Blue and Green loops Set in a beautiful landscape – near the Royal Golf Club – and with wonderful views of the snow-covered Atlas Mountains. The club house, an ochre coloured traditional Kasbah style overlooks the links and creates a muted atmosphere ideally suited for relaxing after a game. This course is testing for any golfer with a number of water features and bunkers but set beautifully amongst palm groves and Moroccan architecture. The course has integrated the “Khettaras” – An 11th Century irrigation system built by the Almoravides Dynasty
27 Holes (9 Holes x 3): Par 72 (18 Holes) – Length: 6657 Metres
Green Course: Par 36 – Length: 3417 Metres
Red Course: Par 36 – Length: 3301 Metres
Blue Course: Par 36 – Length: 3356 Metres
This Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed course is my personal favourite, the celebrated Palmeraie (Palm Grove) at Marrakech and the majestic Atlas Mountains, Trent Jones created an 18- holes masterpiece: The Palmeraie Golf Course. The course is dotted with 7 lakes and covers, beautiful fairways among palm trees with an unforgettable panorama of the highAtlas Mountains. The club house is sumptuous and offers many facilities including an excellent restaurant. A new 9 holes were opened in October 2009 to be played with the back nine of the Robert Trent Jones course. The new course features some impressive water features and has upgraded the complex to a modern championship venue.
27 Holes (9 Holes x 3): Par 72 (18 Holes) – Length: 6214 Metres (original course)
Samanah Golf Club is located 8Km fromMarrakechInternationalAirporton the road to Amezmiz. The complex covers more than 300 ha and benefits from an open view of theAtlasMountain. Over a Hundred Hectares are dedicated to the golf course which was created by Nicklaus Design. Samanah is a “Desert Type” golf Course: the choice of vegetation and plants was realised in this spirit (Cacti, Palm Trees, Olive Trees…). The course measures 6800m from the back tees with a par of 72, but can be played by all standards of player thanks to the wide fairways and different tee positions. The quality of the greens is the key point of the course, although large most have different levels to make some tricky pin positions. The impressive Clubhouse has its architecture inspired by the bulwarks of Marrakech and decorated with ponds and fountains. The Clubhouse includes players bar, TV lounge, Restaurants, Bridge Room, Locker rooms, Proshop and Caddie Masters.
18 Holes Par 72 – Length: 6800 Metres
Al Maaden is situated near the fascinating historical and cultural center of Marrakech, with the majesticAtlas Mountainsas a backdrop. This 18-hole golf course is designed by Kyle Phillips. The golf course has been designed in grand rolling terrain, placed at the foot hills of the nearbyAtlas Mountains. Strategically placed bunkers give players multiple lines of play from the tee and tightly cut spill off areas around the greens gather errant shots, providing a variety of exiting recovery opportunities. Keeping with the traditions of golf, AI Maaden is designed as a walker friendly course, with a surrounding designed landscape and geometric water features that give a feeling of playing through a Moroccan garden
18 Holes Par 72 – Length: 6249 Metres
Opening on the 1st March 2012 Assoufid’s 18-hole, world-class golf course has been designed by Scottish golf professional Niall Cameron. Idyllically set on amazing natural contours against a stunning backdrop of the Atlas Mountains, it features an inviting Club House andGolfAcademy. TheGolfAcademy offers cutting-edge technology, including computer studio suites and club-fitting analysis, plus a dedicated driving range with shaded tees and practice area.
Elsewhere in Morocco Rabat/Casablanca coast line hosts 7 different clubs and resorts. The most famous being Royal Golf Dar Es Salam, home to the Hassen II Trophy on the European tour. The club houses an impressive 45 hole complex. Two 18 hole championship courses the Red & Blue designed by Robert Trent Jones Snr and a nine hole shorter green course, all three offer tree line fairways and are always in superb condition. Other courses worth a mention here are El Menzeh Royal, Mohammedia Royal (both clubs are nearing their centenary years),BouznikaBaywhich has 9 floodlit holes and the new Mazagan golf resort designed by Gary Player and managed by Troon golf.
Further south along the coast another newly opened Gary player designed Mogador Golf Club has been widely acclaimed as one of the best in the country, combined with the on site Soffitel hotel this tailor made golf resort makes a popular destination or combined with a twin centre Marrakesh trip.
Finally the coastal resort of Agadir has also a number of good courses, two 27 hole complex’s Golf des Dunes and Golf de l’Ocean, 36 holes at Golf du Soleil and the 9 hole Golf Royal. All feature spectacular views of theAtlantic Ocean, some great water features and well manicured greens.
Quality Golf Destinations Recommendations for the Area
There is no question Moroccois a great holiday destination, the Atlantic coast resort of Casablancaand Agadir give some respite from the inland heat in the summer months, Marrakeshhas the history and fascinating culture to keep those non golfing days and evenings full of excitement. The golf, with the exception of a few established courses, is relatively new and will only improve with time as the courses mature. The level of service at each and every club we visited was excellent. Club houses are well appointed and in some cases spectacular (does your course have an infinity pool overlooking the 18th green?). The price of golf is very competitive at around £40 per round compared with its Spanish and Portuguese neighbours across theGibraltar straits and all clubs have caddies for around £10 per round. For me the caddies made the golf here a little bit different from Europe, you can save a couple of shots a round by hitting the putt’s on the lines they give you and with all the courses being pretty flat it’s an easy walk when your not carrying a golf bag. All clubs also have buggies which are best booked in advance especially at the older courses (expect to pay around £25-30 per buggy).
Accommodation is generally very good, many of the hotels have been built or refurbished over the last few years, all the main international chains of hotels can be found here with exactly the same standard as you would expect anywhere in the world. The local hotel star rating as with many countries around the world may need to be taken with a pinch of salt, it probably should be on a scale 1-7 inMorocco. If you see a price that’s too good to believe for a 5* hotel it likely to be more of a 3 to 4 star hotel by European standards. We ensure that all our hotels are shown at there European star rating rather than the local standard.
So what about the Camels, Kasbah’s and Bandits, well there are plenty of camel’s around (usually outside your hotel) The Medina in Marrakesh is still straight out of an Arabian knights movie especially in the evening and the Bandit’s? Well thankfully they are confined to the golf course these days, unless you want to buy a carpet! (But that’s another story).
Either way the one thing we can guarantee is a great golfing holiday in a fascinating region of Africa, whether it is a short winter sun break or a longer summer holiday we believe you will not be disappointed.
7 night Marrakesh packages start from only £499 including HB accommodation, 5 rounds of golf and all airport and golf transfers*

October Newsletter | Portugal Yes, Algarve, Anywhere else?
0
We are often asked by clients who love the Algarve to offer an alternative venue for their winter golfing break. Fans of Portugal are drawn back year after year to the Algarve with its excellent beaches, great climate and of course an unbelievable range of golf courses, but if you ask any Portuguese if the Algarve is a fair reflection of there country they will say no!
With that in mind we decided that in 2011 the Lisbon area ofPortugal would be added to our ever growing list of destinations. Lisbon,Portugal’s capital is a fascinating city in its own right (which will be covered in a newsletter very soon) but our focus was on the Estoril golf coast. This region covers the seaside towns of Estoril and Cascais and the hillier inland region of Sintra. The country side in this region is both varied and spectacular from Cascais wind swept dunes to Sintra’s forested hills, valleys and villages. The region has been populated for 1000’s of years and the diversity in the towns span back to historical eras of the Romans, Moorish and Medieval Portuguese. All this set only 30 minutes drive from downtown Lisbon.
The Seaside towns of Cascais and Estoril are iconic Portuguese resorts which are also the homes of many of the wealthier Lisbonites with some of the most expensive real estate in the area being housed on the coastal roads. From Estoril’s famous Casino (the original inspiration for Ian Flemings Casino Royal) to the Marina of Cascais there is as much “chic” found here as the South of France or the more fashionable resorts on the Costa del Sol. A huge selection of Bars and Restaurant line the streets many overlooking the sea and with the towns not being totally dependent on the tourist trade many stay open all year to cater for the locals with inside seating for the winter period. The Seafood restaurants in the coastal towns will not disappoint but if you would like some fine dinning try the restaurants at the Penha Longa resort as it houses the best Japanese restaurant in Portugal “Midori” and a Michelin 2* restaurant “Arola” both are advisable to make a booking before you travel the 7km from the coast. If you are a wine buff try the wines from the local vineyards in any of the restaurants, much of the Portuguese wines are kept for the home market so trust your waiter and you will find some great wines at very reasonable prices.
The choices for accommodation in the region are vast, from self catering apartments overlooking the golf courses, Luxury 5* resorts and great value tourist hotels in the resort towns. On our visits to the region we have stayed and visited a great variety of hotels and apartments all have been of excellent standard. Whatever you require the area has the range of accommodation to meet the most demanding needs or budget.
Eight great courses at seven locations make up theEstorilGolfCoast. All are located within a short drive of each other and the courses are well signposted and easy to find. Roads in the region are modern and well maintained, although some are toll roads the fees are very reasonable (1.25 euro) and the benefits of using the toll roads outweigh the charges. The professional tours have visited many of the courses in the region. Three have hosted the Portuguese Open but can still be played without breaking the bank, indeed one of the best way’s to play the region is with the Estoril Golf Coast passport which allows either 5 or 3 days unlimited golf on seven different courses at discounted rates. The only course not on the passport is the superb Oitavos Dunes. We have included a brief overview of the courses below:
Belas Clube de Campo
Situated north west of Lisbon this championship course undulates along scenic valleys with panoramic views around the course, Belas is acknowledged as one of Portugal’s best constructed layouts measuring 6270m from the back tees the par 72 demands both skill and tactical play.
Golf Do Estoril
The oldest course in the region and has hosted the Portuguese Open 20 times as well as many other professional and amateur events. The course has a reputation of always being in immaculate condition with a friendly clubhouse and bar. With views of theAtlantic Oceanand Estoril this par 69 5313m course is a gem to play, not the longest but then size is not always the best judge of quality.
Lisbon Sports Club
The Lisbon Sports club was originally formed in 1922 with a nine hole layout, the club moved to its present location in 1964 and for many years was only a 14 hole course, this was rectified in 1992 when the final four holes were completed. The course is said to have a Scottish feel to it as its 18 holes are accompanied by a narrow winding brook through beautiful green pine woodland. Not a long course by modern standard but one a visiting golfer will enjoy. Par 69 5285m.
Oitavos Dunes
Overlooking the Atlantic near the town of Cascais, Oitavos dunes is one of the regions golfing jewels. Listed in the world’s top 100 courses by Golf magazine the US PGA official magazine, and the only listed course in Portugal is currently the home of the Portuguese open. As well as a world class course the complex also boasts excellent practice facilities, a five star hotel and a top class restaurant/clubhouse. Its par 71 stretches 6303m from the back tees, a real test when the wind blows.
Penha Longa Hotel & Golf Resort
A 27 hole Golf complex, the 9 hole Monastery course and Championship 18 hole Atlantic course.
Atlantic course
Host of the Portuguese Open on three occasions, this great course is played through the valleys of the Sintra hills. There are times when you could be forgiven in thinking you were playing a course in the Alps instead of Portugal with its Pine tree lined fairways and raised teeing grounds, water comes into play on a number of holes and position off the tee is key to scoring well. 6313m from the championship tees Par 72.
Monastery course
This course spreads around the historical heart of the resort and is a perfect complement to theAtlantic. Ideal for guests who arrive in the late afternoon but who would still like to play a round of golf. Par 70 5176m
Quinta Da Marinha Golf
The beautifully maintained course was designed by Robert Trent Jones jnr. It offers a great challenge along its umbrella pine lined fairways, crossing 3 large lakes and the occasional ravine; players are consistently made to think off the tee. Although the course measures 5870m in its par 71 it has 6 par 3’s that require precision off the tee.
Pestana Beloura Golf
The verdant foothills of the Sintra Mountains offer a breathtaking backdrop for the Quinta da Beloura Golf Course that will stretch both player’s imagination and ability while providing an enjoyable challenge to golfers of all levels. 5846m Par 73.
Costs of playing in the region vary depending on the season you travel, indeed one of the best way’s to play the region is with the Estoril’s Golf Coast passport which allows either 5 or 3 days unlimited golf on seven different courses at discounted rates. The only course not on the passport is the superb Oitavos Dunes.
As a rule the prices are similar if not slightly cheaper than theAlgarve, what you will find is less congested courses and with the quieter courses you can expect an excellent standard of course condition.
Quality Golf Destinations Recommendations for the Area
There are two main ways to play the region. The first is to base your self on one of the golf resort complexes such as Penha Longa, Pestana Sintra or Belas and enjoy reduced green fees in either the resorts hotels or apartments while still only being a 10 – 20 minute drive from the resort towns and beaches. The second is to be based in or around the resort towns Cascais or Estoril. 3 courses Quinta da Marinha, Golf do Estoril and Oitavos Dunes are close to town and take only a few minutes to transfer to by taxi and give the flexibility of the town’s nightlife in the evenings. Both Cascais and Estoril have a great selection of hotels and apartments to suit all budgets. Either way the one thing we can guarantee is a great golfing holiday in a beautiful region of Portugal, whether it is a short winter sun break or a longer summer holiday we believe you will not be disappointed.
